the author regrets not being able to add her usual illustrations to this article because of difficulties with Live Journal.

The term Genie comes from the Latin genius which was a guardian spirit assigned to a person at birth. The French first used the term when translating the wonderful tales that would later be called The Arabian Nights because of it's similarity to the Arabic term jinni (plural jinn).

In Bedouin Arabic jinn means the true nomads of the sands who rarely come in contact with towns or cities unless they have a great need.

But in Islamic theology the jinn are humanity's parallel creation - made of fire and air as opposed to the human's earth and water. They stand lower than the angels and have the same free will that humanity possesses.
They have the same power structure as humanity; existing on a separate plane they are invisible to human eyes and we are invisible to them. Mohammed and the other prophets were able to see and speak to both the jinn and the humans to deliver messages from Allah. A number of the jinn joined Satan in his rebellion and refused to bow to Adam and humanity,.

The Islamic scholar Ibn Taymiyyah, believes that these jinn account for much of what we humans perceive as "magic" - they cooperate or are coerced by magicians; they deliver fortunes to fortune tellers and mimic the voices of the dead in seances. In legends, the jinn, both male and female, are forever carrying off handsome young people to seduce with a life of magic and dreams.

King Solomon, by means of a staff was able to order both the rebellious and the ordinary jinn to do his bidding. The jinn supposedly built Solomon's temple. He was also able to imprison many of the rebellious jinn also called marid in bottles or rings and by the seal that contained his name, force them to grant men wishes. These marid are angry and treacherous - hence the old, old warning "be careful what you wish for."

Another form of the jinn is the ifrit - these roam the sands as "dust devils" and will cause trouble if offended.

The Jinn are as colorful and fascinating as humanity - if we ever encounter a Muslim hunter on the show he/she will undoubtedly have a number of ways to deal with the jinn. Who knows, maybe he/she even has a guardian jinn who follows them around . . .

I'm very sorry. I'm dealing with some RL issues at the moment - those who know me will know what I'm speaking of. I'm just not able to concentrate enough to come up with an essay for discussion at the moment.

Hey everyone,

I'm sure you've all noticed that it has gotten quiet around here. Xmas in July didn't happen because all of us moderators were suddenly busy with real life and we didn't get it on the way on time. I'd like to apologize for that. As it turns out, the summer isn't going to be much different for all of us, so we've decided to take a

HIATUS

until 1st October, when we will once again have time to run the lounge the way we envisioned.

There'll be no new mod posts from us until then. We'll still approve member posts, though, so if you're looking for help with anything SPN related, that's fine.

We'll be back with a new look and new events in the fall. Take care, everyone!

Hey guys,

I've received a few PMs from people who'd love to join the 2010 AU fic exchange, but can't because they're swamped with work for their Big Bang. Since a few people have already signed up, I just wanted to ask everyone if it were OK if we postponed the fic exchange to late summer/early fall (August/September)? That way, everyone will also have something to do over the next hellatus.

As for April/May/June, I have some more ideas to keep you all entertained :)

Just lemme know what you think.

It’s been a blast, helping to start up and promote this comm, and seeing it grow from just us mods to nearly 400 members. Unfortunately, other things in my life have been clamoring for my undivided attention, and I haven’t been able to give as much time to this community as it deserves. Rather than continue on in that manner, I felt that it was best to step aside and let someone with a fresh outlook take my place.

I’ve asked reveria to be that person, and she’s accepted. She’s an energetic, positive, creative person, and I think she will make a wonderful mod. I’m excited and I’m looking forward to seeing what sorts of fun things she’ll come up with.

sablier_bloque has also been busy with school and other things, and has also decided to step down as mod. There will be a post coming to fill that spot, should anyone be interested.

So… for now, please welcome reveria. Go easy on her, and just poke her with the tiny, blunt sticks at first. We’ll save the big, pointy ones for later! XP
